16 - South 9
Salisbury was represented by defensive lineman - JP Wallin
On the
strength of two first half touchdowns the "North" held
off a late "South" rally to win the 17th Annual Senior
Bowl High School All-Star Game 16-9 in front of 1,437 fans at Clarke
Stadium in Edmonton. Strathcona quarterback Corbin Sharun opened
the scoring on the opening play of the second quarter with a six
yard TD run that was followed up 13 minutes later with a Sharun
to Bev Facey receiver Kevin Wuthrich touchdown pass to put the "North"
up 14-0 at the half.
The "South" opened the second half with a single on the
kickoff then made it interesting late after the "North"
could only muster two singles in the second half with a late TD
from Henry Wise Wood's Josh Leung on 22 yard TD pass from his schoolmate
Graham Kelba with 55 seconds left. A fumble on the next "North"
possession made it interesting as the "South" moved the
ball down deep into "North" territory before turning it
over on downs with 8 seconds left. For their efforts the linemen
of the game were Bishop O'Byrnes Josh Symons for the "South"
and Lac La Biche's Brett Waine for the "North". The Most
Valuable Players of the Game were Wuthrich for the "North"
and Bowness linebacker Nickalas Blevins for the "South".

The largest point total
and margin of victory was posted by the “South”
in this years contest. St. Francis High School in Calgary played
a lead roll as wide receiver Marco Ianuzzi and running back
Anthony Woodson combined for 4 of the “South’s”
7 TD’s. For their efforts Ianuzzi, who set a new single
game record for rushing yards with 169 on 7 carries, and Joel
Barry, who accounted for half of the “North’s”
total yardage by himself, were named “South” and
“North” MVP’s respectfully.
60%
of the North's starting offensive line was comprised of the
Triplets Hinds, Sabourin and McGladdery. Sal's lone rep on defense
was defensive lineman Jesse Schryver.

North
29 - South 21 in Overtime
In
what was probably the most exciting finish to a Senior Bowl to
date, five Sabres stood out and helped their team to another North
victory. An South interception that went for a touchdown opened
the scoring of the game. After that, both teams struggled to put
points on the board. The North defense led by middle linebacker
Levi Laseur only gave up one touchdown in the first half. Peter
Vander-Meulen started
the game at center but was also asked to play a some tackle of
the North offense that brought the North within a touchdown before
half time.
In
the second half, the North chipped away at the south lead that
had been extended to 21-13. Then with time running out, Brock
Dermott orchestrated "The Drive", throwing to his arsenal
of Metro League receivers that included Mike Whattam. With under
a minute left, Dermott
led the
North down the field to score to bring the North within 2 points.
After a successful two point conversion, the North sent
the game into overtime.
With
each team attempting a scoring drive from the 35 yard line, each
team's first possessions were unsuccessful. The North were stopped
short and then intercepted a South pass in the endzone. On the
next drive, the ball was given to Tyler Budinski who broke through
the line and scampered 30 yards into the endzone to end the game.
The Sabre program is proud of its contribution to the Alberta
all star game. Congrats on the big win!

2001 Senior Bowl - Team North
Announced
Salisbury
adds four names to the Senior Bowl historical records.
Darcy Bennett, Luke Lavorato, Ian Cuff and Jordan Winkel bring the
total number of Sabres making the squad to 36 since the program's
inception in 1990, third most of any school in Alberta. Salisbury
is the only program in Sherwood Park to have players make it onto
Team North in 2001. Ardrossan's deep threat, Logan Jones,
is the only other player from Strathcona County to make the team.

With the addition of
four more players, Salisbury temporarily overtakes L.C.I. on the
all time Senior Bowl roster list for second place. The southern
try-outs take place this weekend and L.C.I. will have to place
at least 4 players to reclaim second.
The Senior Bowl will
be played at McMahon Stadium in Calgary at 12:00, May 12.
Good Luck Sabres! (and Bison).
North
14 - South 14
#45
Linebacker Darcy Bennet, #43 Center Ian Cuff,
#82 Safety Jorden Winkel, #77 Runningback Luke Lavorato
(Bennet, Cuff
and Winkel were also selected to play for Team Alberta at the Canada
Cup)
The conditions were perfect
for a display of all-star calibre offensive; no
wind, a nice sunny day. However, it was the all-star defenses
that came to play.
On May 21, 2001 the 12th
annual Senior Bowl was played in McMahon Stadium in Calgary.
With names like Cory Jones, Mark Rogers, Jeff Halvorson and Cam Linke
from the north; and Matt McDonald, Lucas McEachern, Michael
Giacalonne, Charles Guedo from the south, there was sure to be some
explosive offense. But instead, names like Jason Bobst, Darcy
Bennett, Dwayne Kumpala, Nolan Garriock from the north; and Rusty
Prete, Josh Bean and Dustin Patzer from the south were filled came
out of the P.A. system.

There were
some highlights for those in the stands who came to see offense: Jeff
Halvorson's 75 yard TD run that was a new Senior Bowl record, Michael
Giacalonne's 40 yard touch down off of a screen play, and Matt MacDonald's
35 yard field goal that was another Senior Bowl record.

Defensively,
there were three interceptions (Jay Zachery, Tyler Boyson, Jason Bobst),
a fumble recovery (Darcy Bennett), six sacks (Matt Molyneux, Dwayne
Kumpala, Jon Whitehead and Dustin Patzer, Steven Greenaway, and Jason
Bobst [2]). Most of the series were held to under 5 plays providing
the punters with a great deal of game time.
Each team
could only muster 14 points, having the game end in a disappointing
tie. As both teams' captains hoisted the cup, it was clear that
no one was overly exited about being "co-champions". But then
again, no one lost either.
The North
is now undefeated in the last three years and have only lost once
in the last 5 years.

23 - South 22
Jay Squire - Slotback
The
game was played Monday, May 22
at McMahon Stadium, Calgary
A thriller
as for the first time in the history of the Senior Bowl the game was
decided on the last play. The game started off with a bang as Lord
Beaverbrook’s Morgan Alexander hauled in an Senior Bowl record
82 yard pass from Bowness’ Brian Hill to take the lead on the
first play of the game. That was quickly followed by two TD’s
from the “North’s” Willie Shulba out of Archbishop
Jordan with a 5 yard run and a 63 yard punt return. Lloydminster’s
Brad Ollen added a FG and the “North” lead at the half
17-8.
The second half saw the “South” pull ahead with two rushing
TD’s from Foothills’ Kyle Maclean and
Luke Mayer out of L.C.I. but the drive of the game came late as Jasper
Place’s Matt Burrows hauled in two clutch catches on 3rd down
to keep the “North’s” final drive alive. Sexsmith
QB Darrell Moe finished it off with a one yard plunge for the TD on
the final play to win 23-22. For their efforts Burrow’s was
named the “North” M.V.P. and Mayer was named the “South”
M.V.P.
(P.S. Spotted
in the crowd were Sherwood Park players that went through the Senior
bowl process last year: Jarred Winkel, Matt Schwartz, and Steve Boyko.
There was also that ex-Falcon character Jason Milne. Thanks
for your support guys, you set a fine example for other alumni from
Salisbury and Bev Facey.)

North Team Staff and Players From Salisbury:
Head Coach Cam Fraser ( 2-0 Senior Bowl Record!
)
Assistant Coaches Brad Duxbury and
Jason Duxbury
(Rempel

selected to play for Team Alberta at the Canada Cup)
After a four year absence the game returned to Edmonton and featured
the largest crowd to date as 1,247 spectators jammed the U of
A’s Varsity Stadium to watch the “North” win
for the second time in the last three years. Salisbury’s
Chad Rempel was the star for the “North” as his precision
passing in the second half extended several drives and ate up
the clock preserving a tight 14-8 win.
Mike Potter from Parkland and Paul Hartwick from Bishop Grandin
scored the only majors of the game in the first quarter and the
rest of the points came off the foot of kickers.
L.C.I. linebacker David Lowry was named M.V.P. for the “South”
while Rempel took the honors for the “North”.

33 - North 14

Defensive Lineman #55 Levi Jaques
Avenging
last years loss to the "North" the "South"
came out strong scoring 20 unanswered point in the early part
of the second quarter which included a record pass and run of
80 yards for a touchdown by Foothills Mike Miller from Bishop
Carroll's David Manning.
However just like in 1997, the "North" did not go quietly
and in the final five minutes of the half they put together two
drives on the strength of Sexsmith QB Blair Zahara's arm and the
running of McNally's David Bissett to draw within six at halftime.
That was unfortunately as close as they would come as the "South"
defence dominated the second half, while Aaron Williams of Bowness
kicked two field goals and Cochrane's Kyle Day caught a 9 yarder
from George McDougall's Ryan Saurett to salt the game away 33-14.
Bissett for the "North" and Saurette for the "South"
were named the game M.V.P.'s.

Little (Game MVP), Head Coach Cam Fraser
(Little
was also selected
to play for
Team Alberta at the Canada Cup)
With the
"South" leaping out to its usual 10-0 lead a funny thing
happened on the way to the blowout. Not only did the "North"
come back with a nice long drive capped off by Serge Armstrong
from Notre Dame's 4 yard TD run but they took the lead before
the half with an amazing 75 yard punt return for a TD by Salisbury's
Josh Little.
The "South"
did mount a comeback in the second half but two spectacular TD's
from Jasper Place's Mike Spencer (75 yard run), and Parkland's
Jeff Derman (38 yard reception from Joe McNalley) kept the "North"
out front to stay to capture their second ever Senior Bowl win
28-20. QB Jimmy Hartley from Brooks was named the "South"
M.V.P. while Josh Little took the
North" M.V.P.

29 - South 20
Salisbury
Represented by Quarterback Jeff Schellenberg
Definitely the biggest
blowout in Senior Bowl history and the "South" punctuated
their fourth straight win with a 29-0 pasting of the "North".
It was the first shutout in the history of the game. Cardston
QB Steve Scott was the class of the field as the Southern Alberta
High School League M.V.P shredded the "North" defence
with 104 yards rushing and one TD to go along with two touchdown
passes. Another "South" Standout was defensive back
Lawrence Deck from St. Francis who set a Senior Bowl record for
a punt return with a 96 yard thriller for a touchdown early in
the game.
Things weren't so rosy for the "North" as starting quarterback
Jeff Schellenberg was knocked out early and the offense struggled
only reaching inside the "South" 20 yard line once.
Kick returner Russ Hart from Lindsay Thurber was named the "North"
M.V.P. for his work on Special Teams.

If it wasn't for
bad luck the "North" wouldn't have any luck at all.
Three times it found itself inside the 10 yard line and couldn't
score. The "South" on the other hand capitalized on
the only two times it was inside the 10 and added a single and
a field goal to win its fourth Senior Bowl in 5 tries 18-6.
Barry McElligott of Bert Church in Airdrie, the "South"
M.V.P., and Brooks' Scott Chomistek scored the majors for the
"South" while Kris Indzeoski added two converts, a
field goal, and a single to found out the scoring.
The "North" made it interesting late as Salisbury
QB Jeff Van Beek hooked up with Lloydminster's Troy Biever who
immediately lateraled to Salisbury's Marc Bennett who rambled
80 yards for the TD. Harry Ainlay's Ryan Hickey was named as
the "North's" M.V.P. for his outstanding play at linebacker.

Defence
was the word of the day for the 1992 game as both side put down
drive after drive and it took a trick place to finally cross the
goal line. At 13:03 of the 2nd Quarter the "North" pulled
their version of the "fumblerooskie" and slotback Danny
Prokiw out of St. Albert scampered into the end zone from 25 yards
out. That pretty much did it for both teams as they could only
muster a single point each the rest of the way. It wasn't for
a lack of trying, the defences were simply outstanding.
After
the trick play the North' did not fare much better as they were
held to a Senior Bowl low 2 first downs in the second half. Cardston's
Jason Beck had a stellar game recovering a fumble and intercepting
a pass out of the linebacker position. For defensive purists it
was a dream game, however we're sure the offensive coaches in
future games will not look to repeat it. The
M.V.P.'s were Lenny Andrews, a runningback out of Salisbury,
for the "North"; and Grady Stevenson, a defensive back
from Sir Winston Churchill, for the "South".
